Though I did see it live at Shoreline on 6/16/90 (with Jerry doing a great job on lead vocals), my favorite version was performed at Ch√Ęteau d'Herouville 6/21/71.

There are many fine versions. I am partial to the Bickershaw Festival '72 version that can easily be found on the Steppin'Out compilation. The tempo, Garcia and the Pig are perfect. Dare I say just exactly perfect?

I am also very fond of the version Jerry sang at the Spectrum 4/8/85. His voice is pure Kermit the Frog (it seemed to improve later in the year as his extreme drug use tapered off) but it's got a lot of heart, swings, and the band sounds like they're having a great time playing it. An interesting set too as it also contains a rare Midnight Hour opener followed by an equally rare and superb version of Walkin' the Dog. The second set opens with a fair Revolution, contains a ridiculously fast Eyes and a wonderful transition from Space into GDTRFB. Worth a listen for that segue alone.

Very aware of that Spectrum version--the Walking the Dog, though--as you say--is the real treat in that trio along w/BigBoy Pete...when Jerry's voice echoes out on the "pretty maids all in a rooooooowwww" 2nd verse it's just gold!

'71 seems to be THE year for BBM...I found an excellent version from 8/15/71.

Pig just owns that tune!
